COLUMBIA — State representative and former S.C. House Freedom Caucus strategist RJ May has resigned months after his arrest for distribution of child sexual abuse material.

"I have decided it is in the best interest of my family and constituents to resign immediately from the South Carolina House of Representatives," May wrote in his resignation letter released Aug. 11. Download PDF

May, who is currently being held at the Edgefield County jail, has remained as the duly-elected state representative for the largely rural, Lexington County-based House District 88 since his June 11 arrest on 10 federal counts of distributing child sexual abuse materials. House leadership suspended him from the chamber that same day.
