A woman was fatally struck by a falling tree branch at a popular Lancashire park.

The woman, in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the entrance to Witton Country Park in Blackburn on Monday night.

The woman was understood to have been walking with a child when the beech tree branch snapped shortly after 8.30pm.

Emergency serviced found the woman unresponsive but failed to revive her.

She is believed to be local as family members were seen arriving at the scene shortly after the tragedy.

The area was cordoned off and Blackburn with Darwen Council, which owns the 480-acre park, has since felled the beech tree from which the branch fell.
