MERIDEN, Conn. (WFSB) - Over 100 headstones were vandalized at a cemetery in Meriden.

Police were made aware of the vandalism at around 7 a.m. after several 911 call from residents reported significant damage to the headstones at St. Patrick’s Cemetery on Wall Street.

Police officers and property management responded and walked through the cemetery. They found that roughly 100 headstones, monuments and obelisks had been knocked off their bases.

Police say some headstones dating back to the 1800s look to be unrepairable.

“Others showed gouge marks that were consistent with the usage of a chain or cable,” police said.

Due to how many headstones were damaged, as well as the size of some, police believe there are multiple suspects.

They noted that there were no tire marks in the grass.
