LEVANT -- The Levant fire department hosted its annual Spark Pug Fire Academy for fourth graders.
It’s been 10 years since the Spark Pug Fire Academy got its start.
Back in 2015, Chief Eric Strout was at a fire scene where a child unexpectedly lost their life.
Chief Strout was able to resuscitate a pug who made it out of the fire, and that moment inspired him to start a program to teach kids; using a pug as the program’s mascot.
“The letters P-U-G... Plan, understand, get out. That’s been the mission we’ve had to teach kids fire safety, and put a little cool spin of our own. That we’re unique," says Chief Eric Strout of Levant fire.
The academy runs for three days and is completely free.
Kids are able to participate in obstacle courses, talk to law enforcement, and see the Fire Mar
