GREECE, N.Y. (WROC) — The town of Greece held its Arbor Day tree planting ceremony on Tuesday, honoring the late Father Eugene Weis.
Father Eugene Weis, who passed away in May at the age of 89, served as a priest in the Rochester Catholic Diocese for over 60 years. He began his career as an assistant pastor at Our Mother of Sorrows in Greece, where he served until 1968.
"He loved Greece and learned his first lessons about community here. Greece is the place where he was really planted," said Dr. Monica Weis, sister of Father Weis.
While serving at Our Mother of Sorrows, Father Weis also volunteered as a member of the North Greece Fire Department, where he handled more than one thousand calls.
Each tree planted around the pond in Greece honors someone who has contributed to the town, wi
