WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A twice-convicted sex offender who faced an automatic life prison term was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old runaway.
David Lamont Drakes, 49, pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child in a plea bargain with the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office that called for him to be sentenced to three concurrent 25-year prison sentences.
Judge Thomas West of Waco’s 19th State District Court accepted the plea agreement despite telling Drakes at a hearing last month that he would not accept any more plea deals in his case after Drakes rejected an identical offer and told the judge he wanted to go to trial. West set Drake’s trial for Aug. 25.
