DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Some businesses in a popular part of downtown Durham told CBS 17 violent crime is a growing concern because several people have been shot and killed in the same area within the last two years.

Most recently, a 16-year-old boy was seriously injured in a shooting Tuesday night in the Brightleaf district near Duke University's East Campus.

During their investigation, police officers taped off the street in front of Mr. Fries Man on West Main Street, where Darius Reid works. Reid is among those concerned by the shootings.

"I have two nieces," Reid said. "Seeing them go out in public and stuff like that, not knowing what's going to happen, it's mind-boggling."
