HUDSON, Ohio - A former prominent criminal defense attorney was shot and wounded by Hudson police after vandalizing a gas station and charging at officers with a hammer, according to video footage released Wednesday by authorities.

Carlos Warner, 54, in recent years had battled mental illness and was hospitalized several times. He stopped practicing law by at least 2023.

The incident involving Warner began around 4 a.m. Thursday when surveillance video captured him using a hammer to shatter windows at a Sunoco gas station. Warner fled before officers arrived at the scene.
