Get ready to step back in time and enjoy Renaissance-era activities here in Michigan starting this weekend.

The Michigan Renaissance Festival opens Aug. 16 and runs weekends through late September, a tradition at its grounds near Holly in Oakland County.

"Hark! Cast aside your cares and embark upon a journey through time! In the village of HollyGrove, the 16th Century stirs once more, brimming with a day of revelry fit for a monarch," the festival's website reads.

The annual festival centers around medieval European society, with highlights of global cultures as well. Festivalgoers also are known to "cosplay" as pirates, fairies, steampunks and other cultural styles loosely associated with the Renaissance.
