ATLANTA — Georgia highways are carrying more commercial trucks than ever, fueled by the Port of Savannah’s deepening, a growing population , and booming online retail. But with that increase comes greater needs for the Georgia State Patrol to step up its maintenance and driving enforcement of commercial vehicles.

The newly renamed Commercial Vehicle Enforcement division has conducted more than 50,000 roadside inspections this year through July 25, checking commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds for safety and compliance. Troopers search for both mechanical issues and driver behavior, such as speeding or distracted driving.

These missteps may be the reasons for the initial traffic stops, but they often spur greater mechanical inspections of these large trucks. Catching problems early
