Thursday marked the 90th anniversary of Social Security.

The program supports nearly one in five New Yorkers across the state and provides at least half the income of older New Yorkers.

The City Council passed a resolution on Thursday to designate Aug. 14 as Social Security Day in the city.

In celebration, AARP is hosting a slate of events across the city to underscore the program’s local and national importance.

Some of those events include a “We Earned It” double-decker bus tour, a Times Square billboard celebration and a NYC skyline light up.

Beth Finkel, the New York State director of AARP, joined “The Rush Hour” on Thursday to discuss what AARP is doing to protect Social Security.
