GREENVILLE, S.C. —

Now more than ever, AARP South Carolina said people who live in the state rely on Social Security for their livelihoods.

The program marks its 90th anniversary on Thursday, Aug. 14, and AARP said it wants to continue to protect and strengthen the program.

"The average recipient of Social Security in South Carolina receives less than $2,000 a month," AARP SC Director Charmaine Fuller Cooper said. "For people who are homegrown and have worked in South Carolina their entire lives, they may receive much less than that as their monthly Social Security benefit. So, those who are worried about the program, speak up. This is your money. You’ve earned it. We must protect it.
