HAMPDEN, Maine — Words no community ever wants to hear, "we have got an active shooter," is how hours of intense training began at Hampden Academy.

The all-day intensive brought together law enforcement, emergency teams, and educators tgoether to role-play what to do in case a gunman enters the school.

Planning the all-day intensive began nearly a year ago, Katherine Dyment, Hampden Academy’s school resource officer, said. Despite the hours of preparation, Dyment said chaos is guaranteed.

"As much as we train this, as much as we implement it, things will not go as planned in training or in real life," Dyment said.

The goal of Thursday's training is to familiarize everyone involved with the plan.

"If everybody walked away with one thing they learned, then we did our job," Dyment said.
