GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - A celebration was held Thursday at the Pitt County Council on Aging to commemorate 90 years of Social Security.
The event was put on by AARP as one of five events across the state.
During the event, presenters spoke on the importance of the program for seniors across the country.
Mike Olender, AARP North Carolina Director, says, “We all are going to need Social Security. We are going to need that baseline of financial security. Social Security has been doing that for 90 years and we believe that’s a strong case that both Republicans and Democrats need to work together to get it done.”
During the event, seniors had an opportunity to write down important events in their lives and put them on a timeline that wrapped around the room.
