Forty years after the Iowa Lottery first kicked off ticket sales at the Iowa State Fair, it's back and better than ever. The Iowa Lottery celebrated the milestone by breaking a Guinness World Record: most people scratching scratch tickets simultaneously.
An official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, Michael Empric, was on site at Elwell Family Park to grant the Iowa Lottery's birthday wish: its very own spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Mere minutes after the event's master of ceremonies Jeff Angelo gave scratchers the go-ahead, Empric confirmed that the Iowa Lottery had indeed shattered the previous record — held by Totalizator Sportowy Lotto in Poland. A whopping 1,380 people had participated in the attempt, giving them an 830-person lead over their predecessors.
