PHOENIX – City Manager Jeff Barton is retiring after four years as Phoenix’s top unelected official, the city announced Friday.

Barton has worked for Arizona’s largest city since 1999, when he came on as an internal auditor.

He went on to serve in a variety of roles — including budget and research director, deputy city manager and assistant city manager – before being elevated to the Phoenix city manager job in October 2021.

One of the last major decisions Barton made came in July of this year, when he selected Matt Giordano as the Phoenix Police Department’s first permanent chief since 2022.
