A lawsuit filed by a Hobart man last month alleges that two of the city's police officers violated his civil rights when they allowed a police dog to bite and severely injure his arm.

Manuel Mendez III filed his suit against the city and the officers in Lake County Superior Court on July 14. The complaint stems from a July 14, 2023, incident in which Hobart officers Matthew Stutler and Cody Riggle arrived at an 11th Street residence to execute multiple outstanding warrants for Mendez's arrest.

According to a probable cause affidavit later filed by Stutler, the active warrants concerned pending charges of burglary, attempted robbery, criminal confinement, possession of cocaine, synthetic identity fraud, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. The affidavit was filed
