HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A road connecting Ewa Villages and Kapolei that was on the verge of closing will now remain open.

The city is taking over control of Philippine Sea Road from the Hawaiian Railway Society after they announced plans to close the road last month.

The Hawaiian Railway Society wanted to close the road because of problems with speeding, criminal activity, and lack of funding.

“The bigger Ewa-Kapolei community obviously wanted it so they don’t have to go down Roosevelt that turns into Geiger to Kapolei Parkway and go around,” said Steve Vendt from the Hawaiian Railway Society. “The society wasn’t happy and wasn’t really interested in closing the road, but we had to do something to protect ourselves about the liability.”
