CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Fire reports that a man is dead after being pulled from a submerged car that plunged into Lake Erie from the East 9th Street Pier early Saturday.

Fire crews responded to the area at approximately 2:45 a.m. and were told by police that a vehicle was in the water off of the end of the pier. Cleveland fire officials noted that the car was approximately 100 feet offshore and submerged with its rear tail lights visible.

Cleveland fire's Technical Rescue 1 unit deployed a pair of divers who swam to the vehicle, while a fire boat arrived to assist with needed tools to enter the vehicle. A male victim was pulled from the vehicle and taken to the boat, where crews began to perform CPR.
