NORFOLK, Va. — As the school year kicks off, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore is working to ensure children don’t go hungry when school meals aren’t available on the weekends.
The Foodbank’s backpack program runs throughout the school year, providing consistent support to students in need. For many children in Hampton Roads, school isn’t just about learning; It’s also a reliable source of food.
That’s why Christopher Tan, President and CEO of the Foodbank, says the backpack program is doing all it can to help.
"The backpack program aims to identify those students who may have an additional need for the weekend and providing them a backpack worth of food every other week," explained Tan.
Over the past decade, the program has expanded to meet a growing need. To
