FORT PLAIN, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Fort Plain Police announced the arrest of a Canajoharie man after an animal abuse investigation. Gregory Leary, 76, was charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals (Buster's Law).
Detectives determined that on August 1 around 6:40 a.m., Leary allegedly struck a kitten with his pickup truck while driving westbound on Canal Street in Fort Plain. Leary is accused of crossing into the opposite lane of traffic to intentionally hit the animal before fleeing the scene.
Fort Plain Police stated that a witness in the vicinity reported the incident immediately and additionally drove the injured cat to a local veterinarian. Officials confirmed that the kitten required surgery to remove a severely broken leg, but is currently recovering.
