RODANTHE, N.C. — Concern is growing for Outer Banks residents that the impacts of Hurricane Erin may seriously affect the region.

All areas of Dare County were issued a local state of emergency, and evacuations began Monday morning for visitors on Hatteras Island. Residents will evacuate beginning Tuesday at 8 a.m. Dare County officials said NC-12 could become impassable by 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Kim Hurley owns an Outer Banks-based cleaning company and said the ocean overwash expected on NC-12 is a big concern for her.

"12 is going to overwash," she told 13News Now. "12 is going to be impassable."
