A resident of a charming medieval cottage in a Kent town named this year as among the county's top spots to live in, is not allowed to paint it pink, a planning inspector has ruled at appeal.

Simon Brunt has lived in the Grade II-listed home in King Street in West Malling for almost 14 years, and wanted to repaint the front's "very dull and boring" off-white to pink.

He had chosen light pink for the property which is part of a row in a Conservation Area. Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council in rejecting the Listed Building Control application, said "rather than an aesthetic appeal, the pink colour would add a discordant feature to what otherwise is a most harmonious group of structures".
