PORTSMOUTH — When Elizabeth Viveiros started her new position as school superintendent on Aug. 12, she wasn’t a stranger stepping into unknown territory.

After 13 years in the district — first as principal of Melville Elementary and then as deputy superintendent — she was stepping into what she calls her “dream job.”

“It’s definitely what I worked for all of these years, but in Portsmouth, it’s even more than that. I feel like the last 13 years, I’ve really built a network of connections, relationships — people that feel like family,” Viveiros said.

Viveiros, 49, is starting her 28th year in public education. She began her career as a special education teacher in the Bristol-Warren district, spending eight years in that role before teaching second grade for six more. When
