NEWINGTON, Conn. — A new school year starts next week, and the Newington Police Department is looking to hire four additional crossing guards to ensure student safety.
Crossing guards who work in the town are hired by Newington police.
The department is looking for dedicated and responsible people to protect students as they go to and from school.
“There’s definitely been a rise in unsafe drivers that are on the roads,” said Sgt. Matthew D’Esposito, who contributes to support services for the police department.

He says crossing guards are the first line of defense when protecting students.
“This is one way we can help make sure our children are able to safely cross the street,” added D'Esposito.
