The search for a Norwegian man who vanished while trekking the Hudson Bay coast is entering its seventh day, with RCMP now working under the assumption he was swept away in the Hayes River just kilometres from his destination.

Steffen Skjottelvik, 29, left Fort Severn, Ont., on July 25 with two dogs, aiming to walk hundreds of kilometres north along the coast to York Factory, Man. Over the past month, he had covered that distance on foot before going missing just a few kilometres from the finish line.

He was last heard from on Aug. 14, when RCMP say he messaged that he hoped to arrive the next day. He never made it.

On Thursday, Manitoba RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Paul Manaigre confirmed that Skjottelvik’s GPS device last transmitted coordinates on the afternoon of Aug.
