NEW ORLEANS —

The city of New Orleans is trying to block the Municipal Police Employees Retirement System known as MPERS and Louisiana Treasurer from contributing to the pensions of almost 50 NOPD officers.

And there's a twist: The retirement system wants to know why former NOPD Officer Jeffrey Vappie got his full retirement money when other officers are fighting to get theirs.

Lawyers for Mayor LaToya Cantrell requested — and received — a temporary restraining order in Baton Rouge last week after being ordered to pay $870,000 into the former officers' pensions.

All officers involved retired between 2021 and 2025.

In 2023, a court ordered the city to pay.
