PORTLAND, Ore. — Multnomah County will open formal cooling centers on Friday and Saturday as the Portland metro area braces for its second heat wave of the summer. The forecast shows it could be hotter and longer than the first.

Highs may climb to 100 degrees or slightly higher on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures are expected to stay in the upper 90s through Tuesday.

The extreme heat prompted Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson to declare a state of emergency on Friday. It will go into effect at noon and last through noon on Monday.

Between now to 10 p.m. on Friday and on Saturday, TriMet won't turn anyone away if they're traveling to a cooling center and can't pay their fare. The agency said riders should tell their bus operator that they're heading to or from a cooling cen
