The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has prevented more than £1 billion in erroneous Universal Credit payments as part of efforts to protect claimants from falling into financial hardship.

This landmark figure was achieved following an expanded review programme launched by the UK Government after taking office last summer, with over one million cases now examined.

Incorrect overpayments can ultimately push claimants into debt, creating significant financial strain.

The 'Targeted Case Review' initiative, launched in 2022 to identify erroneous payments, examined approximately 25,000 claims during its inaugural year.

From July 2024, the DWP has almost doubled its Universal Credit Targeted Case Review workforce to 6,000 staff members, reports the Daily Record .
