City officials have a bold vision for the planned whitewater channel that would include attracting an Olympic team to train in its rapids.

“Our goal is to have a facility that if team France was in the U.S., they would need a place to train,” Danville Parks and Recreation Director Bill Sgrinia told the Register & Bee during an interview at his office Thursday afternoon.

Sgrinia said he expects to begin seeking bids for construction of the whitewater channel project at the former White Mill this coming fall.

At its next meeting, Danville City Council will vote whether to appropriate $6 million for the whitewater channel project.
