AVON – For the better part of three quarters in Friday’s high school football season opener, Avon looked like a team headed for its fifth straight losing season. Down two scores midway through the fourth quarter to Decatur Central, the Orioles made a comeback for the ages spurred by some head-turning individual plays for a wild 30-28 overtime win.
One of those players, wide receiver Shawn Curry (four catches, 93 yards, three touchdowns) ignited the comeback with a 44-yard kickoff return, setting up his first score on a nifty pass-and-catch lob from senior quarterback Jace Cameron to cut a 22-7 deficit to 22-14 with just under 7 minutes remaining.
