WAKE COUNTY, N..C (WTVD) -- A single-car crash Sunday morning left one person dead and another injured, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

It happened around 4 a.m. on US-64 East near Lizard Lick Road in Wake County. Authorities say the driver ran off the road, hit a median guardrail, then crossed both eastbound lanes, went off the road again, and hit a tree before the car caught fire.

One person in the car died at the scene, but their identity hasn't been confirmed yet because the fire made it difficult to recognize them. The driver was taken to WakeMed Hospital with injuries.

Authorities believe speed and reckless driving played a role in the crash, and charges are pending. The investigation is still ongoing.
