VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WDBJ) - The Virginia State Police Department is investigating a shooting involving an off-duty agent that occurred near 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 24.

A 40-year-old man attempted to break into the home of an off-duty agent via the front door. A confrontation ensued between the off-duty agent and man, during which the agent shot the man with his agency-issued gun, said VSP.

The gun shot victim was taken to a near by where he later passed away from his injuries, according to the Virginia State Police.

The off-duty agent was injured from the altercation and was treated at the hospital; his injuries are not a threat to his life, said investigators.

The off-duty agent has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
