During the summer, employees of the Roger D. and Carla B. Smith Intercultural Center were told that they would not be returning to Emporia State University for the fall semester. To comply with state law, the Intercultural Center has ceased operations.

Mike Torres, Director of the Intercultural Center, was informed, along with Percy Holt, Intercultural Center Coordinator and BRIDGE program, and Nyk Robertson, Senior Adversity Officer and Assistant Dean for the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies, in early June that their positions were being terminated.

Their positions were eliminated as a result of a section in the Kansas state budget, banning all positions, mandates, programs, activities, training requirements, grants and contracts related to DEI within state agencies and state univ
