Police in Mwanza District have arrested 39-year-old James Gunda Phiri for allegedly being in possession of 1,300 kilograms of marijuana.

Mwanza Police spokesperson Hope Kasakula confirmed the arrest, stating that Phiri was apprehended at the Mwanza border following a tip by well-wishers.

This suspicion prompted forensic officers to conduct a search, which led to the discovery of the marijuana hidden in ten barrels.

According to Kasakula, the marijuana was being smuggled into Tanzania via Lilongwe.

He is currently being held in police custody and is awaiting trial on charges of possessing marijuana without a permit.

Phiri hails from Nkhukuteni Village, Machinjiri, Blantyre.
