Suspects 'tried to pass counterfeit £20 and £50 notes' in shops in Atherstone town centre. But police say that the pair were foiled by shop owners.

Atherstone town centre CCTV operators worked with shops with specialist retail radios to alert each other about the duo. "Two males tried to pass counterfeit £20 and £50 notes in the local shops," Atherstone officers said.

"The males were unsuccessful thanks to the swift response from local businesses and left the town centre shortly afterwards in a vehicle." But the hunt for the pair continues and police were able to get some key evidence.

"The vehicle registration details have been noted for further enquiries through the SNT team," the team reported in an update on Facebook. The incident at the weekend was the latest action from the team
