A Niagara police investigation into historical sexual exploitation of children has resulted in the arrest of two people.

Niagara Regional Police detectives in the internet child exploitation unit began working the case in May that involves child sexual abuse material.

A suspect was identified, and further inquires revealed additional evidence and multiple victims, police said.

The alleged offences date back to 2007.

Police announced Tuesday they had arrested a 49-year-old Welland man and a 49-year-old Wallaceburg, Ont., woman.

The man is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, making child pornography and possessing child pornography.

The woman is charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.

Police said detectives believe there still may be victims unknown to them.
