COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Students at the University of South Carolina and their parents still have questions after the university confirmed an alert for an active shooter on its campus this past weekend was a swatting hoax .

It’s happening across the country at various universities. Someone will call to report an active shooter or shooting, and authorities later determine it was false. While students told WIS they were thankful alerts were being sent to their phones, they say communication still wasn’t clear enough.

Mia Ochoa is a junior at USC, and this wasn’t the first time she’s had to hide in fear. She can recall the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida that left 17 dead. She attended a school just miles away and was put on lockdown for hours.
