STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- The Strongsville City School District, for the 2025-2026 school year, is sending buses to pick up pupils living 1¼ miles or more from their schools instead of 1 mile or more as in past years.
The change became necessary due to an ongoing shortage of bus drivers . The shortage means that district drivers have had to run additional routes.
“They are driving more than they are contracted to,” Steve Breckner, the district’s operations manager, told the school board earlier this year.
“They’re getting burned out.”
Bus driver shortages have been a problem for years in school districts throughout the United States. In August 2023, USA Today reported that the COVID-19 pandemic worsened the situation.
