OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Omaha Public Power District has an update recent phone scams in the metro area.
In a release sent Tuesday, OPPD says in August, it has received 53 reports from customers receiving calls that they are “past due.” These customers were asked to call the number back to make a payment.
OPPD says that scammers are using new technology to make their number appear local, as if to represent the utility. Prior to this month, the latest wave of scam calls was in May.
The scammers will call from the phony number saying customers are either overdue on their bills, or owe money based on equipment when they do not. Scammers are generally aggressive over the phone, and demand pre-paid debit cards and gift cards as forms of payment.
