FLOYD COUNTY, Indiana — Costs are about to increase for some drivers in southern Indiana.
Floyd County will be implementing a $30 wheel tax on registered vehicles starting in 2026.
The Floyd County Council approved the measure this week. Council President Danny Short says this fee became necessary because of new state laws that impact funding.
The first he mentioned was Senate Bill 1 , which cuts property taxes for homeowners. Short echoes other local government officials who say the cut in property tax will also mean a drop in revenue.
"What it did was push a lot of things back on counties and municipalities to pick up the slack," Short said.
Short says the urgency to implement a wheel tax increased when another state measure passed that requires local governments to collect a whee
