Drivers warned over 10-second 'siren' on Sunday as they risk being fined

Ahead of a 10-second 'siren' set to take place this weekend, drivers have been issued a stern warning.

The UK Government is planning a national test of the emergency alerts system at 3pm on Sunday, September 7.

All mobile phones and tablets connected to 4G or 5G internet are expected to emit a loud siren-like sound and vibrate for 10 seconds - even if they are set to silent.

Motorists who will be driving at the time of the alert are being strongly advised not to pick up their phone when it happens - but to remain calm and concentrate on driving.

The AA has advised drivers to acknowledge the message only when it's safe to do so, responding to it once they have stopped in a safe location with the engine off.
