KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — With summer drawing to a close, it won't be long until East Tennessee locals and tourists alike can enjoy the changing of the leaves.

6 News Chief Meteorologist Ken Weathers says that cooler-than-average temperatures in recent weeks have helped start a few trees begin to show a tinge of color, but warmer temperatures are likely to return later in September. As a result, lower elevation areas won't see much more change until well into October.

Areas of the Tennessee Valley like Knoxville typically reach peak levels in late October or the beginning of November. Peak color across the highest elevations of the Smokies are usually seen in early to mid-October, while fall colors in the Cumberland Plateau and parts of Southeast Kentucky often peak in mid-to-late Octobe
