As a sea of purple and green balloons floated into the sky, a crowd of family and friends mourning the loss of 41-year-old Linda Hill and her 12-year-old son Kardi Jackson called out a chorus of “I love you.”

Carletha Williams, Linda’s cousin, said, “Rest in peace, cousins. I love you,” as she released her balloons, one of more than 100 people gathered at Hazel Park Junior High on Wednesday night to mourn Hill and Kardi, who were killed Monday afternoon in their Hazel Park home.

“I’m so confused on why and how did this happen,” Williams said. “I’m lost for words. I don’t know what could’ve triggered this.”
