LOWELL, Mass. (WPRI) — Police have recovered a replica weapon and identified a suspect after an hours-long lockdown and search at UMass Lowell on Wednesday.

Authorities were notified around 2:30 p.m. of an individual brandishing a gun near one of the residence halls. The report immediately prompted a heavy law enforcement presence on campus, including a SWAT team and the FBI, as a search for the suspect ensued.

UMass Lowell was under a shelter in place until around 5:15 p.m. when police determined the suspect was no longer in the area.

Investigators identified the suspect seen in a video circulating social media as a teenager and said the suspected weapon was determined to be an airsoft replica gun.
