When Jacob Schaefers first hosted a veteran suicide awareness walk, participants were asked to walk 22 laps around a 400-meter track, representing the 22 veterans per day on average who ended their lives by suicide. While he still hands out 22 tickets to start, the average has dropped to 17.6 per day, according to the most recent Veterans Affairs report.
