The mother of a young woman killed in a drunk driving crash stood at the Manitoba Legislature on Tuesday demanding answers after learning the man accused in her daughter’s death had walked away from bail conditions just hours after being released from custody.

“This justice system needs change,” said Meechelle Best, the mother of 28-year-old Kellie Verwey of Portage la Prairie, who was killed Jan. 15 in a collision police allege was caused by an impaired and reckless driver. “The fact that he did not even have an ankle monitor on means that today he’s out there, we don’t know where he is. The police don’t know where he is. And at this point, my understanding is we don’t even have a warrant for his arrest yet. This is wrong.”
