MCPHERSON, Kan. (KSNW) — After two summer floods damaged the Roundhouse gym floor at McPherson High School, USD 418 is looking at long-term solutions to keep it from happening again.
Engineers say the June 18 flood was a rare 200-year storm, followed in July by back-to-back 100- and 50-year events. Their study found the 2022 athletic field did not cause the flooding and may actually slow water before it reaches the floodway.
Recommended fixes include enlarging the detention pond, testing its pumps, raising doorways, and adding temporary barriers.
The school board approved replacing the gym floor in July but later paused the project to hear from engineers. Members will take up the issue again at their Sept. 15 meeting.
