CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- Thursday marks 24 years since the 9/11 terror attacks. Ceremonies and events will take place across Central North Carolina, including the annual stair climb at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Inside Kenan Stadium, UNC ROTC program will the firefighters who courageously climbed the Twin Towers to save lives, only to lose their own. Beginning at 6 a.m., participants will climb 2,071 stairs to symbolize the steps taken by first responders on that day.
The event is open to the public, and attendees are encourage to pay their respects. One cadet shared with Eyewitness News that the sacrifices made on September 11 inspired her to serve.
