OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management awarded a $1.9 million grant to revitalize the Scarboro community in Oak Ridge.
The grant aims to restore the historic Atomic Elks Lodge to a hub for community engagement, focusing on economic development, healthcare and education.
“It will provide a lot of opportunities for educational programs, and it’s going to improve the quality of life in the Scarborough community,” said Rose Weaver, a Roberta Bohannon Temple Daughter. “The grant will afford our community an opportunity to do some exciting things with not only adults, but also seniors and youth.”
The Atomic Elks Lodge dates back to World War II, when the building served as the Officers Club for Army officers in the Manhattan Project.
